NEW YORK, NY, February 21, 2005 – Love Our Children USA announced today that actor Mekhi Phifer, who portrays Dr. Gregory Pratt on the hit NBC television show E.R., won the $10,000 grand prize on its behalf on the most recent episode of the Travel Channel's World Poker Tour's Hollywood Home Game.
Mekhi was one of six celebrities who played No Limit Texas Hold 'Em on game six of the show’s third season, which aired on February 20th. The show brought LeVar Burton (Star Trek) John Hensley (Nip-Tuck), Andrea Parker (Less Than Perfect, The Pretender), Adrian Young (drummer for No Doubt), and Wil Wheaton (Stand By Me, Star Trek: TNG) who joined Mekhi.
Sparks flew as the stars played some highly enjoyable poker and mid-hand chip chatter as they battled it out over the lion’s share of $25,000 for their favorite charities, as well as the single, coveted $25,000 seat at the WPT Championship which goes to the last celeb standing.
“While celebrity poker tournaments are the biggest rage and the stars love playing for charity, they bring charities additional exposure and the money from the winnings is put to good use,” said Ross Ellis, Chief Executive Officer of Love Our Children USA. “We are thrilled and deeply grateful to Mekhi Phifer and the World Poker Tour for this donation.”
Mekhi Phifer claimed the crown taking home a generous $10,000 for his charity, Love Our Children USA. And of course, the much-desired $25,000 seat at this year’s WPT Championship.
