Tips For New Parents

Becoming a parent will be the happiest time of your life. It’s rewarding and joyful, but it’s the most difficult job in the world. To help you be the best parent you can be, Love Our Children USA offers you these helpful New Parent Tips that will help you during those initial weeks with your new infant that are the beginning of a lifetime of love, nurturing and happiness.

  • New parents don’t get a lot of sleep, but getting rest is important. When your baby is sleeping, parents should nap and sleep as well. It’s a great idea for moms and dads to take turns sleeping late when possible.
  • Take care of yourself. Eat a well-balanced diet, exercise, get regular medical checkups, and, most importantly, try to get enough sleep! Accept offers from trusted family and friends to baby-sit and take an occasional break. When your child sleeps, take time for yourself to relax, nap, read a book, listen to music, take a bath, or call a friend.
  • Help your baby develop a sleep routine. Create a sleep time ritual. Keep naptime and bedtime at a consistent time each day.
  • Learn as much about your baby as you can. Learn which skills your baby will develop and when. Spend time observing the way he looks at the world and how he responds. This will help you understand all of his behaviors.
  • Every child is different. Follow your baby's lead to figure out the best way to comfort and communicate with him. While you may not be a first-time parent, don’t think that your baby will react like your other children. Siblings in the same family are different from each other, and these differences can be seen as early as at birth.
  • When you have questions, ask. If you have concerns call your doctor or local clinic.
  • Join a parenting group. Talking with other new parents can give you new ideas and you can share concerns.
  • Make family time a priority. Read to your baby and play with him every day. Plan time each day to spend with your other children, if you have others, and let them know that you love all of your children the same. With a newborn, don't put too much pressure on yourself. Housework may need to wait while you take care of your family.
  • Dads should share in the joy, experience and rewarding time of caring for their baby.
  • Keep a calendar of when your baby is due for immunizations.
  • If you have other children, be sure to let them know how much they are loved. A great idea is to have a party for your other child (children) when the new baby comes home to celebrate their being a new sibling. This will make them feel special and want to interact even more with the new baby.
  • If you begin to feel overwhelmed or frustrated, ask trusted family, friends and neighbors for help and take a break.

Most of all … enjoy your baby. Parenting should be a wonderful experience. Giving your baby all the love and nurturing is the greatest gift for all of you.
