Tips to Prevent Children From Falling Out of Windows
Can’t happen to your children?
Sadly it could if you don’t take precautions.
It’s getting warmer outside and people are more likely to open their windows.
Each year in the U.S. 15 to 20 children under the age of 11 die, and nearly 15,000 are injured, because of falls from windows. Window falls tend to occur in low-income neighborhoods with deteriorating housing, unsatisfactory window construction and no air conditioning – but not always.
Years ago it happened to Eric Clapton’s young son who fell to his death from his apartment in a high rise residential building in a very tony area of New York City.
According to Dr. Wendy Pomerantz, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital "Window falls are a major cause of injuries and death in children, especially those living in urban areas.”
In fact kids living in apartment buildings fall from windows at five times the rate of children living in other types of residences.
How To Prevent Window Falls
- Don't leave young children alone
- DON’T rely on screens to keep children from falling out of windows. They cannot prevent falls.
- DON’T place furniture near windows where kids can climb up to window
- If possible open windows from the top
- Install window guards. They prevent children from falling out of open windows.
In New York City it is mandatory to have window guards on all windows if a child under the age of 10 lives in the apartment.
If you own your home and have a child under the age of ten install window guards. If you rent ask your landlord to install them.
