Drug Safety

Whether it’s flu season or your kids have a common cold, it’s important to give children medications as directed on the label.

How to give your child over the counter medicines safely:

  • Always read and follow medicine labels exactly
  • Use the measuring device that comes with the medicine
  • Do not give a child medicine that is meant for adults
  • Only give the medicine that treats your child’s specific symptoms
  • Never give two medicines at the same time that contain the same active ingredient
  • Do not use oral cough and cold medicines for children under age 4
  • If your child has any medication allergies, read label carefully to ensure those ingredients are not in the over the counter medication
  • Never use an over the counter medicine to sedate or make a child sleepy
  • Never give aspirin-containing products to a child for cold or flu symptoms unless told to do so by a doctor
  • If your child develops any side effects or reactions that concern you, stop giving the over the counter medicine and contact a doctor immediately
  • Keep all medicines out of your child’s reach and sight
  • If you have any doubts or questions call your doctor, pharmacist, or other healthcare provider

Learn about pain relievers and fever reducers, as well as those including acetaminophen. While acetaminophen is safe and effective when used as directed, it can cause liver damage if too much is taken. Always follow the recommended dose and do not take more than one medicine that contains acetaminophen at the same time.
